Storytelling: A Trial Lawyer's Secret Weapon in Leadership and Influence
Jerome DeRoy and Julienne Ryan recently had me as a guest on their Narativ Storytalks podcast (LISTEN HERE) (EPISODE 112). I had the pleasure of sharing my insights on leadership and communication skills in this engaging conversation.
As someone who has walked the path from courtroom advocate to communications educator, I've discovered that the art of storytelling isn't just for bedtime tales – it's a powerful tool that can transform how we lead and influence others.
My journey, which includes an unexpected detour through acting school, taught me something crucial: authentic communication hits different. It's not about memorizing scripts or putting on a show. Instead, it's about bringing your whole self to every interaction, whether you're presenting to a board room, communicating with clients and adversaries, or persuading a jury.
During our discussion, I shared how emotional intelligence plays a starring role in effective leadership and lawyering. Think of it as having a high-definition antenna for reading the room. When we truly tune in to others, our ability to influence and connect skyrockets.
I've seen this play out countless times in my career, including one memorable courtroom case where genuine storytelling didn't just win the verdict – it moved jurors to go above and beyond in offering support after the trial was over! WATCH BELOW:
Through my Power Lab program, I'm now helping other professionals and attorneys, develop these same skills. We focus on managing the butterflies that come with high-stakes situations while building authentic connections that matter. It's about leveraging the power of our brains to transform that nervous energy into your superpower.
This podcast conversation dives deep into how anyone can harness storytelling to become a more impactful leader. Whether you're steering a team through change or making your case in the courtroom, it's the stories we tell that bridge the gap between information and inspiration.
