YOUR EQ IS WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE INFLUENCE

In today's fast-paced world, the ability to influence and communicate persuasively has never been more critical. I've spent my career honing the skills that allow me to connect deeply with others and achieve extraordinary results.
Throughout my career as a trial lawyer and entrepreneur, I've learned that blending emotional intelligence, storytelling skills, and strategic thinking is key to making an impact - whether I'm advocating in the courtroom, making business deals, or coaching others to step into their power.
As I wrote about previously, I had the opportunity to share this journey with the brilliant duo and podcast hosts Jerome Deroy and Julienne Ryan on the Leadership Storytalks podcast. In case you haven't listened already, I invite you to listen to the episode here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1861177/episodes/15945031)
The topic of emotional intelligence reflects a vital direction my work is taking and is a critical influence skill.
Why Emotional Intelligence Is the Foundation of Influence
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is at the core of effective communication, and I've seen firsthand how vital it is for leaders to cultivate this skill. When you connect on an emotional level, you transcend technical expertise and create meaningful interactions that leave a lasting impact.
As leaders, it's not just about being intellectually sharp; it's about tuning into your audiences' emotions, navigating complex social dynamics, and inspiring trust. When I speak, I balance empathy and self-awareness to meet the needs of my audience while remaining true to my own.
I've found that EQ isn't just an asset – it's the foundation for creating genuine influence and collaboration. It's also the foundation upon which I built my law career.
An important aspect of EQ is connecting to the right brains of your audience (readers/listeners) to make an emotional connection. Storytelling is one technique that will help you do this.
The Transformative Power of Storytelling
Storytelling isn't just a tool – it's a transformative process. Over the years, I've learned that an effective persuasion tool is storytelling (although it's certainly not the only tool in the shed). I used it successfully in my courtroom practice, where a well-told story can make all the difference. It goes beyond presenting facts – it's about crafting a narrative that speaks to people's hearts.
How Storytelling Rewires the Brain
Studies show that storytelling activates emotional centers in the brain (the right brain, in fact), making listeners more open to influence. This emotional connection is where real work happens. By sharing authentic and relatable stories, listeners can bypass the analytical part of the brain and speak directly to the emotions on the right side of the brain. The right side of our brains is the place where decisions are made.
When you connect emotionally with your audience, you also foster trust and encourage empathy and emotional connection. This is the key to ensuring your message is heard and felt.
Overcoming the Fear of Visibility
I know first that the fear of public speaking is a significant hurdle for many high performers. It's often labeled as the #1 phobia, and I get it. The anxiety of standing up, speaking out, or putting yourself out there in any form can feel overwhelming. Will we fail? Will it be judged?
I've learned that the key to overcoming this fear is authenticity. Public speaking isn't about being perfect - it's about connecting with your audience in an honest and meaningful way.
Once I stopped worrying about flawless delivery and started focusing on creating genuine moments with those I was speaking to, I began feeling much more confident.
It's not just about delivering a script; it's about engaging with your audience in a personal and impactful way. And I'm here to tell you: it's possible to transform that fear into confidence.
Building Confidence and Composure with the Power Lab
I created The Power Lab - to teach others how to stay composed under pressure and speak authentically, especially in high-stakes situations. I've combined techniques from neuroscience, psychology, and storytelling to create an experience designed to equip people with the tools and the confidence they need to get their ideas across when it matters most.

My work in The Power Lab is designed to dissolve your resistance to being visible and your doubts about your effectiveness and to give you the confidence to speak persuasively and effectively, regardless of the pressure you may feel.
How to Cultivate Influence in Your Leadership and Your Career
Here are some suggestions for honing your EQ and leadership skills:
Hone your Emotional Intelligence: practice active listening and reflect on your emotions to connect with others on a deeper level.
Master Storytelling: Share stories that align with your audience's values and experiences to build trust and drive action.
Regulate Emotions Under Pressure: Develop strategies to stay calm and composed, even when the stakes are high.
Becoming influential requires practice, patience, and a commitment to personal growth. These skills aren't innate in us all, but they can be developed, refined, and perfected. It's incredibly satisfying and happens even more quickly when you do so with a mentor or in a supportive peer community.
